Over fifty years ago, Merle Armitage published a book called "The Railroads of America". In it, he listed the major railroads of the time. I took his list and tried to see where they all went. I also compared to a 1980 source of Class 1 railroads.

The Rhinebeck & Connecticut

New York Central and Hudson River Railroad
All about the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. The New York Central was created in 1853 by the merger of ten other railroads, spearheaded by Albany industrialist Erastus Corning. Commodore Vanderbilt brought it together with the the Hudson River and Harlem Railroads.
